29th Lusofonia Festival kicks off next week Traditional music and dance performances to be held in the city districts showcasing the charm of Sino-Lusophone cultural exchange

MACAU, October 16 - Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) and co-organised by the Macao Government Tourism Office and the Municipal Affairs Bureau, the “29th Lusofonia Festival” will be held from 23 to 25 October at the Taipa Houses, further showcasing Macao’s charm of Sino-Lusophone cultural fusion. As part of the programme of this year’s Arts and Cultural Festival between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, the activity “Where Culture Flourishes, Happiness Happens – Traditional Music and Dance Performances in the Community” will also be held on 24 and 25 October, bringing culture and arts closer to the public through traditional music and dance performances.

In its 29th edition, the Lusofonia Festival has become a signature event that showcases the cultural diversity of the Portuguese-speaking communities in Macao. This year marks the “China-Brazil Cultural Year”, and therefore the Festival places a special focus on Brazilian culture, featuring renowned Brazilian singer Fafá de Belém as the headliner, who will treat the audience to a spectacular performance brimming with Brazilian flair through her powerful voice. Brazilian chef Rose Ávila, who has a rich experience in Brazilian and Latin American cuisine, will present a variety of authentic dishes. Brazilian urban art artist Fábio Panone Lopes, who specializes in diverse creations such as murals and graffiti, will present his works on-site. His paintings even extend to daily items, allowing the public to experience Brazilian art and culture. A “Giveaway Check-in Station", where participants can register and complete assigned tasks to enter a raffle and enjoy fabulous prizes, will be set up at the event venue.

In addition, the Festival will feature Cultural Exhibitors of 10 Portuguese-speaking communities residing in Macao, namely Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor, Goa, Daman and Diu, and the Macanese community, who will share their music, crafts, customs, gastronomy, tourist information, and other aspects of their culture. Singer Fafá de Belém  from Brazil, and art troupes EPO Dance from Equatorial Guinea and Timor Furak from East Timor, along with more than 40 local Portuguese-speaking artists will perform on the stage at the Amphitheater of Taipa Houses and Largo do Carmo, bringing the public electrifying performances.

A temporary restaurant, operating in the Taipa Municipal Garden, will serve typical Portuguese specialties and grilled food, while at Largo do Carmo, specialties of various Portuguese-speaking communities will be served at dinner, combined with light music performances. A kiosk serving typical Portuguese snacks and drinks will also be set up next to the entrance to the Taipa Houses. Furthermore, a range of interactive games are also available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 3pm to 6pm during the event. The Largo do Carmo will stage traditional Portuguese games that include sack race, wooden spoon race, climbing the tallow stick, tug of war, throwing the ball, rings on the crosspiece, among others. Table Football and several recreational games will be held at the Taipa Houses, and the public is welcome to participate.

In order to allow the public to experience the charm of cultural diversity, the activity “Where Culture Flourishes, Happiness Happens – Traditional Music and Dance Performances in the Community” will also be held at various districts, including Lok Kuan Building in Seac Pai Van, Leisure Area in Lok Yeung Fa Yuen building, and Anim’Arte NAM VAN. The Fumei Yingge Dance Troupe of Guangdong Puning City from Mainland China, will present energetic traditional Yingge dance, highlighting the bold spirit of Chinese folk culture. The EPO Dance Troupe from Equatorial Guinea will combine traditional African rhythms with contemporary dance, showcasing the vitality and rhythm of African youth. Meanwhile, the Timor Furak Dance Troupe from East Timor will present traditional dance and costumes, preserving and promoting their unique culture and customs.

Through a rich array of cultural booths, music and dance performances, gastronomy and interactive games, the “29th Lusofonia Festival” and the “Where Culture Flourishes, Happiness Happens – Traditional Music and Dance Performances in the Community” allows residents and tourists to experience the cultural vitality of the Portuguese-speaking countries and regions at a close range, highlighting Macao’s role as “a base for exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and diverse cultures coexist”, contributing to the development of Macao as a “Cultural Exchange Centre between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries”.
